Definition and Explanation

In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras (3.4), Samyama is defined as the combined practice of Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (absorption). When these three are applied together on a single object or idea, it leads to profound insight and mastery over that subject.

Today, we turn our hearts to the teaching of the great sage Patañjali, who in his Yoga Sutra 3.4 reveals the pathway to transcendent insight through Samyama. He declares:

Trayam ekatra samyama?

“The three—Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi—when united on one object, constitute Samyama.”

(Yoga Sutra 3.4)

Let us understand Samyama.

• Dharana (Concentration): The steady fixing of the mind on a single point or idea without wavering.
• Dhyana (Meditation): The uninterrupted flow of awareness toward that chosen object, free from distraction.
• Samadhi (Absorption): The blissful merging of the meditator with the object itself, where subject and object dissolve into oneness.

When practiced together, these three form Samyama—the key that unlocks supernatural knowledge (vibhuti) and reveals the deepest truths of existence.

Let us look at the similarities to Samyama in Sacred Traditions.

In Christian Contemplation.

Our Lord Jesus invites us into focused, secret communion:

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

(Matthew 6:6)

Here we see a call to withdraw from outer distractions, to concentrate our hearts in prayer, reflecting the spirit of Dharana and Dhyana that lead us into divine Samadhi.

In the Wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita

Krishna teaches Arjuna:

2. Cultivate Dharana: Sit in stillness. Fix your gaze—externally or inwardly—without letting the mind wander.
3. Deepen into Dhyana: Allow your awareness to flow unbroken toward your chosen focus, welcoming each moment with gentle attention.
4. Merge in Samadhi: Surrender the sense of “I” and “you”—become one with that which you behold. Rest in the silence beyond thought.

Let us start today. A few minutes each morning or evening will open the door to profound transformation. Consistency will blossom into mastery, self-realization, and enlightenment.

O Divine Light,

You who are the still center of all being,

guide my heart into true concentration and meditation.

Grant me the grace to unite Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi—
